Step 1: Surface Preparation (Most Critical Step)

  • Position the tape 1.5 to 2 inches (40-50mm) from the front edge of each step. This is where most foot pressure lands

Step 3: Apply 3M 94 Primer (For Difficult Surfaces Only)

Step 4: Position the Tape

Peel back about 4 inches (100mm) of the backing paper from one end of the tape strip.

  1. Hold the tape with the exposed adhesive facing the stair
  2. Align it parallel to the stair edge using the markings from Step 2
  3. Press only the first 4 inches down firmly with your fingers
  4. Slowly peel back the rest of the backing while pressing the tape down section by section

Critical: Do NOT remove all the backing paper at once. Anti-slip tape adhesive is highly aggressive. Once it touches the surface, it cannot be repositioned without damaging the tape.

If you are applying multiple strips per step, install them one at a time.

Step 5: Press and Roll (Activates the Adhesive)

This is the second most-skipped step. Anti-slip tape adhesive is pressure-activated. Without proper pressure, the bond strength is only 30-40% of maximum.

  1. Use a hand roller or rolling pin
  2. Roll firmly back and forth across the entire tape surface
  3. Apply at least 15-20 lbs (7-9 kg) of pressure
  4. Pay extra attention to edges and corners. These peel first if under-pressured

A properly pressed strip should feel completely flush with the stair surface. No air bubbles, no lifted edges.

For large installations, a small hand-held J-roller works much faster than a kitchen rolling pin and provides consistent pressure.

Step 6: Cure Time

The adhesive needs time to fully bond with the surface before heavy use.

  • Indoor environments (60-80°F / 15-27°C): 2-4 hours minimum, 24 hours ideal
  • Cold environments (below 50°F / 10°C): 24-48 hours
  • Hot environments (above 90°F / 32°C): 1-2 hours

During cure time, avoid stepping on the tape, do NOT clean or wash the area, and keep it dry (especially outdoor installations).

After 24 hours, the bond reaches 95% of its full strength. Full cure typically completes within 72 hours.

Step 7: Final Inspection

After cure time, inspect each stair:

  • Press down firmly on the entire tape surface. There should be no air bubbles or movement
  • Try to lift the corners gently. They should be completely flush
  • Run a fingernail along the edges. No lifting

If any strips look wrong, remove them now (use a heat gun to soften the adhesive) and reinstall with proper preparation.
